Nestled just over the border in Suffolk, a short drive from Diss, Thornham Walks offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, families, and walkers alike.
Getting There & Parking
Upon arrival, you'll find a large gravel car park at the main entrance, with an all-day parking fee of £2.50 on weekdays and £3.50 at weekends. If it’s a busy day, an overflow car park is available just across the road.
Facilities & Visitor Experience

At the entrance, you’ll be greeted by a visitor centre, a fenced play area for children, and the welcoming Forge Café, which offers both indoor and outdoor seating—perfect for a post-walk treat.
For your convenience, disabled composting toilets are available at both ends of the surfaced footpath, ensuring comfort for all visitors.
Due to Thornham Walks’ ongoing conservation efforts, dogs must be kept on leads at all times to help protect the local wildlife and array of plant species.
Walking Routes & Accessibility

The main surfaced footpath is wheelchair and pushchair-friendly, ensuring accessibility for everyone. This ¾-mile route winds through serene woodland and past the historic walled garden at the far end.
At the far end of the main footpath lies the walled garden, home to Beyond the Wall, a charitable project that works with individuals aged 16 and up who have disabilities. The garden features a small, seasonal plant and produce stall, with all profits going directly to support the Beyond the Wall initiative.
For those looking for a longer adventure, Thornham Estate boasts over 12 miles of walking trails, meandering through picturesque woodland, parkland, and farmland. These dirt trails provide an immersive experience in the natural beauty of Suffolk, making it a fantastic spot for exploration in any season.
The Enchanted Wood & Hidden Gems

One of the highlights of Thornham Walks is the enchanting Enchanted Wood. This magical area is filled with fun surprises for children, including a hollowed tree carving that’s perfect for little ones to hide inside, as well as a whimsical folly to explore. For a peaceful break, there’s also a large picnic area where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings.
As you wander through the woodlands, be on the lookout for magical tree sculptures scattered throughout the area. These carvings add to the charm of the woods and make for great photo opportunities. If you need a rest along the way, you’ll find plenty of benches strategically placed throughout the woodland trails.
There’s also a pet cemetery tucked away in the woods—a bit of a quirky feature, but an interesting one, nonetheless. It’s heartwarming to see that pets, through the generations, have been loved just as much as we love our own today. While it may feel a little somber, it’s a reminder of the special bond we share with our furry companions. It adds a unique layer of character to the estate, making it a peaceful and reflective spot for visitors.

A Lasting Thought
Whether you're looking for a relaxing stroll through the woods, a family-friendly adventure, or a peaceful spot to reflect, Thornham Walks offers something for everyone. Its natural beauty, thoughtful conservation efforts, and the sense of community and history make it a truly special destination. With its enchanting woodlands, scenic walking trails, and unique features like the Beyond the Wall project and the Enchanted Wood, Thornham Walks is a place where nature and human connection come together in harmony. It’s a perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and create lasting memories on the edge of Suffolk.
